Key focus/scope

The Lambeth pilot is a joint project including NHS Lambeth, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM), Lambeth Council and local voluntary organisations Certitude, Mosaic Clubhouse and Disability Advice Service Lambeth. The pilot will focus on adults with severe and enduring mental illness receiving services from SLAM in Lambeth.

Overview of pilot and its purpose

The pilot will explore a personalised approach to health care and support services and will enable people to have more opportunities, choice and control. The pilot will assess how this improves equality of provision and people's quality of life, and how health, wellbeing and care needs are met more effectively.

The pilot aims to work with 20 people. This will include ten one-off payments to support prevention and recovery needs for those not eligible for secondary care services; and ten personal health budgets for people living in residential placements and wanting to move to independent accommodation. These budgets will be offered to people with complex needs, and will encourage improved joint working across health and social care.

Objectives of pilot

The pilot aims to:

  • explore how personalisation and personal health budgets can support people's recovery
  • increase the number of people accessing personal budgets in Lambeth's integrated mental health service
  • develop good practice in areas such as co-production, support planning and brokerage in conjunction with the voluntary sector, and examine the sector's capacity to provide a support planning and brokerage role
  • provide training and support to staff and voluntary sector organisations in areas personalisation
  • work with Lambeth's self-directed support team to develop a streamlined approach to personal budgets, and cascade this learning throughout staff teams in Lambeth
  • develop and implement the project in co-production with people and their carers, and staff in health and social care, to co-produce personal budgets in Lambeth and focus on development of greater patient involvement in the development of the personalisation agenda
  • evaluate the successes and challenges involved in developing the pilot to inform how personal health budgets can be successfully embedded into everyday practice.
