Key focus/scope

The Yorkshire and Humber Renal Network pilot will concentrate on transport for renal patients undergoing maintenance haemodialysis. The Renal Network is committed to improving the flexibility of choice and the quality of transport available to renal patients.

Overview of pilot and its purpose

Personal health budgets for transport and transport providers offer a range of options, which enable people to make a choice. This takes into account people's own clinical needs, including whether they make their own arrangements.

The pilot will focus on a cohort of 64 people, who will attend the Barnsley satellite unit. If the pilot rolls out, it will cover people across the six primary care trust areas in the region, accessing the two main renal units in South Yorkshire and their associated satellite units.

Objectives of pilot

  • To offer renal patients the option of a personal health budget, so they can take responsibility for their own transport requirements and tailor them to their own specific needs
  • To offer people a clear option of choice
  • To develop a means of application, assessment and payment that ensures equity of access and good fiscal governance.
